Volume 10 (2011-2012)

In the fall of 2011, Marquette University Law School introduced its new website.  Many of you are probably very familiar with the site, however, you may not be as familiar with those portions of the site devoted to the Sports Law Institute and Sports Law program.

2012 Sports Law Alumnus of the Year

Please join me in congratulating Ante Udovicic of the Class of 1998 the 2012 winner of our Sports Law Alumnus of the Year Award.  Ante is the Athletics, Activities & Recreation Coordinator, South Milwaukee High School, South Milwaukee.  Ante transferred to Marquette as a second year student. As a student he was heavily involved in the Sports Law program, eventually becoming the Executive Editor of the Marquette Sports Law Journal on what for one semester was a 2 person editorial board and 9 person staff.  Ante was then hired as a consultant for the National Sports Law Institute, working here from 1998-1999.

Since 1998 Ante has participated in numerous sports law panels, seminars, conferences.  He has hosted one of the Sports Law program's longest running student internships for the past 9 years.  He has also visited many sports law courses to add his perspective as a high school athletic director.  He has truly given back to our program in many different ways.

Ante received the Award at the Law School's Alumni Awards reception and was again recognized during our Annual Awards Dinner on April 27, 2012.

2013 Sports Law Alumnus of the Year

Our 2013 Sports Law Alumnus of the Year will be Eryn Doherty, a member of the class of 2000 and Assistant General Counsel/Executive Director, Labor Relations, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Los Angeles, California. Mark your calendars for our Annual Sports Law Awards Banquet on Friday, April 26, 2013, where we will honor Eryn as our 2013 recipient.

Current Legal and Business Issues Affecting International and Professional Sports

On Friday, October 19, 2013, we will host our annual fall conference on Current Legal and Business Issues Affecting International and Professional Sports, featuring panels  focusing on Olympic sports, dispute resolution in sports, corruption issues, sports facility issues, and current issues facing professional team sports.  We are in the midst of conference planning but hope to send out information to all of you in the next few weeks.  As always, all alums can join us at a significantly discounted rate ($25, or $150 off the normal attendance cost).  We anticipate that the conference will once again be worth 7-8 CLE credits.

Annual Sports Law Golf Classic

The annual golf classic will be held on Saturday, October 6th, 2012, at Silver Spring golf club.  We appreciate the consistent support of all of our alums in sponsoring holes, sending in prizes, and participating in the golf outing.  Look for information on the 2012 outing to come your way soon.

Networking Lunches / Career Panels

As many of you know each year we hold a couple of lunches where small groups of alums come to talk to current students about their involvement in the program. We also host an anuall career panel with a larger group of alums who talk to students about the connection between their participation in the program and what they do now.  I will soon be planning these events for the 2012-2013 academic year. Thank you to those of you who offered to participate in your response to my membership survey from earlier this summer.

Sports Law Internships

As you also probably know, we are always looking to expand our internship program.  If you our your organization could use the services of a law student intern, even if the internship would take place entirely online, please let me know and we can work to set something up.
