How did your participation in the Sports Law Program prepare you for your current position?
The Sports Law Review was hard work and extra hours, but it also prepared me for the real world. Now that I'm practicing, I've had to draft briefs and memorandums for both the circuit court and the court of appeals. My experience using the Bluebook for Law Review helped me with my citations for those documents. Additionally, as an Associate Editor, we had routine meetings and had to work as a team. In my role as an attorney, I'm part of several teams. Each member of each team plays a crucial role in the final outcome. Law Review taught me how to play my part as a member of the team in order to reach the desired outcome I would also note that while my current job has nothing to do with sports, the Sports Law Program helped prepare me for my role. The beauty of the program is that it exposes students to a wide array of law that we may not otherwise be exposed to in law school. For example, I never would have taken a course on arbitration or antitrust law, yet I was exposed to those areas of law through the Sports Law Program. And because I learned about these areas through the sports world, I took more of an interest in them. I was more engaged, more attentive. Having that wider breadth of knowledge makes me more valuable to my employer.
Would you recommend participation in the Sports Law Program to incoming admitted students? If yes, why? Please include any advice for these students as well.
Yes. As I've previously mentioned, the exposure of the program is unparalleled. Between being exposed to various areas of the law you normally would not be exposed to, to meeting and engaging with various individuals you never thought you'd see in person (Bud Selig was a top one for me). Whether you plan to work in the sports field or not, I would recommend the Sports Law Program. It will benefit you in whatever future job you have. And more than anything, it makes law school more enjoyable, and trust me, you are going to want some more joy in your life during your law school years. You might even find your future spouse through the Sports Law Program.
