PROFESSOR PAUL ANDERSON is the Director of the Sports Law Program and National Sports Law Institute and an Adjunct Professor at Marquette University Law School.  Paul earned his B.A. in economics and philosophy, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Marquette University and is a graduate of the Law School, receiving the first Joseph E. O’Neill scholarship for sports ethics.  He currently teaches Advanced Legal Research in Sports Law; Workshops on Legal and Business Issues in Collegiate Athletics, Legal Issues in Youth, High School and Recreational Sports, The Impact of Gender Equity Laws on Sports, and Representing Professional Athletes and Coaches; a Selected Topics in Sports Law Seminar, and a Contemporary Legal Issues: Sports Law Research Program course.  He has also taught Topics in Advanced Legal Research—Sports Law, The Law of Amateur Athletics, The Regulation of Amateur Athletics, Entertainment Law, Workshops in Amateur Sports Law and Legal and Business Issues in Entertainment Law, a seminar titled Sports, Law & Society, and has co-taught a Sports Venues Workshop, and the Seminar in Economics: The Economics of Sport in the College of Business Administration. 

A former Editor-in-Chief of the Marquette Sports Law Journal, former Managing Editor of the Journal of Sport & Social Issues, and former Editor of the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, Professor Anderson is the supervisor and co-faculty advisor of the Marquette Sports Law Review.  He is the author of numerous articles and several books including Major League Leases: An Overview Of Major League Facility Leases and How They Are Negotiated (2001) (with Miller) and Introduction to Sports Law (2009), Introduction to Sports Law (2nd Ed. 2016) (with Spengler, Connaughton, and Baker), and is the co-editor of Sports Betting and the Law (ASSER International Sports Law Centre, 2012) He is also a reviewer and emeritus editor for the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, and reviewer for Communication and Sport (peer-reviewed quarterly journal that publishes research to foster international scholarly understanding of the nexus of communication and sport) published by Sage Publications; a member of the advisory board for the International Sports Law Journal, ASSER International Sports Law Centre, The Hague, Netherlands; the Sport Finance special issue of the International Journal of Financial Studies (an open access journal in Basel, Switzerland); and a member of the board of reviewers for the newly established Indonesian Journal of International and Comparative Law, under the auspices of the Institute for Migrant Rights, Cianjur, Indonesia.  He was also an Outside Reviewer, on behalf of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), reviewing a planned Austrian Doctoral Programme (DK) entitled “Tourism, Sports and Law,” submitted by scientists from the University of Innsbruck, and is a Reviewer for Transparency International’s Global Corruption Report (2015).

He is the founder and chair of the National Sports Law Institute’s Sports Law Alumni Association and received its 2003 Sports Law Alumnus of the Year Award.  At the Law School he is faculty advisor for the Entertainment Law and Sports Law Societies, the Sports Law Competition Board, the Entertainment Law Moot Court team and the advisor for the Intramural Negotiation Competition, Collegiate Athletics Negotiation Competition, Sports Law Moot Court, Baseball Arbitration, Basketball Negotiation, Football Negotiation, Game Day Sports Case and Sports Law Negotiation teams.

He is the past-chair of the Sports and Entertainment Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin and a member of the ABA’s Forum on the Sports and Entertainment Industries, the Sports Lawyers Association, the Sport and Recreation Law Association, and the International Association of Sports Law.

 

DANIEL E. KATTMAN is a Shareholder, Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c and has developed a unique legal practice that reflects the convergence of brand, media, and technology in the digital age. BRYAN T. KROES is an attorney with Hurtado Zimmerman SC.  Bryan pairs legal expertise with practical experience to ensure that his clients receive comprehensive legal services at every stage of representation.

As an entertainment attorney, Bryan represents musicians, artists, theater owners, publishers, and other creative types in matters related to entertainment contract negotiation and preparation, copyright issues, dispute resolution, and general business. A lifelong musician himself with an extensive history of touring and production work, Bryan brings a seasoned, unique and personal approach to the business side of entertainment. Bryan is a founding member, and currently serves as Treasurer, for the Wisconsin Entertainment Lawyers Association, whose mission is to: 1) foster the growth and development of the arts and entertainment communities in Wisconsin through comprehensive legal services, 2) advance the practice of entertainment law in the State of Wisconsin, and 3) provide a platform for networking, education, and collaboration.

Bryan’s law practice further includes construction contract negotiation, including intellectual property law issues, and commercial and residential real property acquisition. He also has experience in public bond finance, including revenue anticipation, commercial line of credit and general obligation fundings. He represents trade contractors, designers, and owners in dispute resolution related to perfection of lien rights, defect claims, property purchases, sales and leasing, and intellectual property protection.

 

BILL MILLER serves as an Associate Professor of Sports Management and Department Chair in the Health, Kinesiology & Sport Management Department at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside located in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Professor Miller teaches courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in the sport management program at UWP. His courses typically focus on revenue generation and sports law issues with Sport Business & Finance (undergrad), The Business of Minor League Baseball (undergrad), Current Issues in Sport Management (graduate), Financial Management for Sports Organizations (graduate) and Revenue Generation and Sales in Sports Organizations (graduate) among his recurring class offerings at the university.

One of Bill’s main areas of research focus throughout his career has been sports and entertainment facility naming rights. He has consulted with facilities and sponsors in naming rights negotiations and also authored two books on the subject, Facility Naming Rights and Naming Rights Deals.

Bill is a former Chairperson for the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Sports and Entertainment Law Section and currently serves as a member of the Board for the group. He is also a member of the Sports Lawyers Association (SLA), Sports Marketing Association (SMA), Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).

 

Barbara Osborne is a Professor with a joint appointment in Exercise and Sport Science and the School of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The recipient of two university teaching awards, Osborne was presented the North American Society for Sport Management Distinguished Educator Award in May 2020.    A co-author of two sport law text books, her current academic research focuses on legal issues in intercollegiate athletics, gender equity, and medical issues in sport.   She has earned degrees in Communications (University of Wisconsin-Parkside), Sport Management (Boston University) and Law (Boston College Law School). 

Osborne’s experience in the sport industry includes college athletics administration, coaching, public relations, television sports commentator, publisher and sports information director.  She is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and Massachusetts, served as General Counsel for the National Association for Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (now Women Leaders in Sports), and worked for Ice Miller LLP in their collegiate sports practice group.  She has also served as the Chair of the Sport and Entertainment Law section of the North Carolina Bar Association, and is a member of the Sport Lawyers Association, North American Society for Sport Management, and the Sport and Recreation Law Association.  She was honored with the SRLA Betty van der Smissen Leadership Award and is a Research Fellow. 

 

PETER J. STRAND is with Mandell Menkes LLC in Chicago.   Peter has extensive experience drafting, analyzing, revising, and negotiating complex entertainment industry agreements including record contracts, music publishing agreements, literary publishing agreements, film and television production agreements (producer, director, actor, composer, location, etc.), content and catalogue acquisition and distribution agreements, and agreements between creative collaborators (songwriters, coauthors, bands, production companies). These entertainment industry agreements typically address issues of ownership, compensation (royalties, advances, back end, upfront fees, and buy-out fees) control, credit, and content acquisition (options, licenses, works made for hire). He has represented authors, film/television production companies, recording artists, songwriters, on-screen and behind the camera talent, record producers, composers, and life story subjects.

Mr. Strand is a partner at the entertainment, media, and intellectual property law firm Mandell Menkes LLC in Chicago. He represents content creators and providers including authors, songwriters and composers, recording artists, musicians, television and film writers, independent record labels, music publishers, independent film producers and documentarians, and production companies in various transactional and litigation matters in the entertainment industry. In addition to contract preparation, analysis, and negotiation, he - 2 - assists clients with protecting and enforcing their copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights; licensing or exploiting their creative works; acquiring and distributing content; and selecting, securing, and protecting product and service brand names. In addition to his law practice, Peter has taught entertainment law and music law as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law, Chicago Kent College of Law, DePaul University College of Law, and Marquette University Law School. Peter is the Chair of the ABA Forum on the Entertainment & Sports Industries. He has served in several leadership positions for the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy, including National Trustee, President, Vice President, and Chapter Governor. Chambers USA named Peter to Band 1, Media & Entertainment – Transactional in 2018. In 2015, Peter was named one of the Top 100 Attorneys in Illinois by Chicago Magazine. He has been also selected as: “Super Lawyer -- Billboard Magazine’s 50 Attorneys of Note in the Music Business” in 2014; Entertainment Law-Music Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers Magazine in 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2018; “Leading Lawyer” in Arts, Entertainment and Sports in Illinois from 2003 – 2018 and in its 2018 Top 10 list for Arts, Entertainment and Sports in Illinois; and an “Illinois Super Lawyer” 2007-2018. He has been profiled in Crain’s Chicago Business, Illinois Super Lawyers Magazine, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, and Wisconsin Lawyer Magazine. Peter also provides pro bono legal services to musicians, artists, and arts organizations through the Lawyers for the Creative Arts, where he has been involved as a volunteer, Board Member, and on the Honors Council for more than 20 years. In 2008, Peter received the Thomas R. Leavens Awards from the Lawyers for the Creative Arts for his distinguished service to the arts through LCA. Before becoming an attorney, Peter played and recorded as a full time touring musician with several bands including Yipes, who recorded two albums for RCA/Millennium Records and released its third album in December 2018.
