Important Study Aids Update

The start of the semester seems far too early for the law library to reach out with information about study aids, yet in the interest of transparency it is important that we offer an update.

As our returning students know, the law library provides complimentary access to a variety of study aids, both in print and online. In recent years, Quimbee has been included in those options, and we recognize that this has been a popular resource with many. Unfortunately, the cost of this subscription has skyrocketed since we first subscribed, with Quimbee increasing its renewal cost by 320% for the coming year. For this reason, the law library joins other law schools’ libraries in not renewing Quimbee this year. Returning students with accounts should have access through October 11. Students may, of course, sign up for an individual membership directly through the company’s website after our group subscription ends—individual ‘Gold’ subscriptions are currently $29/month—though we encourage you to consider the many other resources already available to you through the law school.

As we continue to explore options, you will continue to have access to videos about legal topics, hypotheticals to test your understanding, and more through existing subscriptions. (This wouldn’t be a message from the library about study aids without the reminder that study aids never substitute for your own work. Focus on learning from class and utilize strategies that maximize your prospects for academic success, including approaches you learn as 1Ls through SSP and ASP.)

Study aids and related resources available to you through the law library include:

  • CALI
    • Interactive legal tutorials, lessons, podcasts, and even embedded quizzes
    • Browse by class or use the Subject Outlines
    • Don’t have an account? Contact the Reference Desk for an authorization code.
  • Lexis
  • LexisNexis Digital Library
    • Study aids in the Mastering, Questions & Answers, Skills & Values, and Understanding series, as well as select treatises and other resources
    • Create annotations and use tags
  • Thomson Reuters Westlaw

Study aids aren’t just available online. Our print collection includes the Examples & Explanations and Questions & Answers series, among many other study aids. E&E is an excellent choice if you are looking for hypos with detailed explanations, and Q&A is an equivalent with a focus on multiple-choice and short-answer questions, plus a practice exam, again with answers. Check the library’s Study Guides for 1Ls and Study Guides for 2L/3L Courses for more information.

Please contact Prof. Elana Olson or the Reference Desk for questions about available study guides, or Dean Fodor to discuss SSP, ASP, or one-on-one academic advising.
