Marquette University Law School Mock Trial Team

Led by Adjunct Professor of Law and Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Halopka-Ivery and Adjunct Professor of Law and Assistant District Attorney Grant Huebner, Marquette University Law School's Mock Trial Team is a selective, year-long curricular experience.

In the fall semester, Mock Trial Team members learn the process of conducting a jury trial and how to develop a case. Fall semester activities include semi-weekly practice sessions and a statewide scrimmage.

In the spring semester, team members put their knowledge to the test by participating in a national competition: the American Association of Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition. Marquette Law School sponsors two teams to the competition and has a proud record of success.

Why should I join?

The Law School's Mock Trial Team is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable trial advocacy experience while competing against peers from other law schools. Students get first-hand experience in utilizing the Federal Rules of Evidence, questioning witnesses, making persuasive arguments, and advocating on behalf of your "client."

Mock Trial Team members earn two credits in the fall and two credits in the spring for their work. Participation in the team also satisfies a requirement of the Litigation Certificate

Team members earn credit, make life-long friends, network with and learn from skilled trial attorneys and judges, and learn critical skills as they prepare for a career in the courtroom.

How do I participate?

All students, including 1Ls, interested in Mock Trial Team are encouraged to attend scrimmages, competitions, and even practice sessions!

In April of each year, the Trial Team conducts tryouts for the following academic year. Tryouts consist of a three-minute statement and one cross examination of a witness. More information will be posted in Law News. Students can try out for Mock Trial Team (for the following academic year) at the conclusion of their 1L or 2L year.

In addition, students interested in trial advocacy are welcome to join the student-run Marquette Trial Lawyers Association, which partners closely with the Mock Trial Team on a variety of activities and events.
