The mission of the Marquette Law Mentorship (MLM) program is to generate a sense of community and support among law students by fostering real, lasting relationships between mentors and their mentees. In our experience, students who engage with the program leave it with bonds that hold long after their time at Marquette Law School.
All first-year law students and transfer students are invited to participate in MLM, which is supported by the Office of Student Affairs. MLM is entirely voluntary. This past year nearly 90% of our incoming first-year class participated. New students are matched with an upper-class mentor based on academic interests, shared experiences, hometowns, hobbies, and/or other common interests. Mentors help welcome their mentees and guide them to the academic, social, and professional resources available to them, helping them quickly integrate into the Law School community.
Starting law school is an exciting, but daunting, endeavor. Participating mentees gain an immediate connection to a second- or third-year law student, who serves as a guide to help mentees make a successful transition to Marquette University Law School. Participating mentors take on a leadership role in the Law School and continue to form their own professional identities in the process.
