LAW SCHOOL CORRECTIVE ACTIONS 2008–2009 THROUGH 2025–2026

Complaint: False statements, failure to comply with the directions of a Law School or University employee, violations of community law, and excessive absenteeism – Violation of Academic Regulations 901(2), (3), (4), and (6)

Findings: Student made false statements to faculty and administration; student failed to follow a university stay-away directive; student was arrested; and student was excessively absent from law school courses.

Corrective Action: Student suspended for two and a half years, with the possibility to request re-enrollment for fall 2028, subject to several requirements and participation in an interview with members of the faculty and administration; student awarded a “W” in all fall 2025 courses.

Admitted Violation: Cheating – Impermissible use of artificial intelligence in drafting final assignment – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty

Corrective Action: Student will receive a significantly lowered grade in the course. Students required to submit the dean a written reflection on integrity in the practice of law, which, along with a copy of the corrective action, was placed in the student's permanent record at the Law School.

Admitted Violation: Cheating – Impermissible collaboration on final assignment – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty

Corrective Action: Student received a significantly lowered grade in the course. Student required to submit to the dean a reflection on integrity in the practice of law, which, along with a copy of the corrective action, was placed in the student's permanent record at the Law School.

Complaint: Cheating - Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) - Honesty - Impermissible use of artificial intelligence on multiple assessments and unauthorized collaboration on a final exam.

Findings: Student used unauthorized and prohibited artificial intelligence tools to complete two assignments and three final assessments. Student engaged in unauthorized and prohibited collaboration on a final exam. Student displayed a lack of candor when responding to the inquiries of the Judicial Committee.

Corrective Action: Student was suspended for a two-year period, beginning with the Fall 2025 semester, and may apply to the dean for reinstatement thereafter; student was awarded a grade of F in the four classes in which the cheating and collaboration occurred; student must provide a letter of apology to the professors involved; and student’s application for reinstatement must include a reflection statement expressing how the student will avoid future ethical violations as a student and as a member of the legal community. The student reflection, along with a copy of the corrective action, will be placed in the student’s permanent record at the Law School.

Complaint: Failure to disclose character and fitness information on Law School application and subsequent amendment to Law School application – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty

Findings: Student omitted required information from law school application, failed to correct omissions in an accurate or timely manner, and again omitted required information in two amendments to the student's law school application.

Corrective Action: Student must wait for a six-month probationary period before receiving a degree; student may not participate in May 2025 graduation ceremony; and student must write and provide a statement of reflection to the dean. The student reflection, along with a copy of the corrective action, will be placed in the student’s permanent record at the Law School.

Admitted Violation: Cheating – Impermissible collaboration on final assignment – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty

Corrective Action: Students received either an F in the course or a significantly lowered grade, depending on culpability. Students required to submit reflection on integrity in the practice of law, which, along with a copy of the corrective action, was placed in each student's permanent record at the Law School. 

No complaints were referred to the Judicial Committee during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Admitted Violation: Cheating – Impermissible use of artificial intelligence in drafting final paper – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty

Corrective Action: Student received a grade of F in the course. Student must write a reflection on academic integrity, professional responsibility, and the appropriate place for AI-driven technology in legal education. The student reflection, along with a copy of the corrective action, was placed in the student’s permanent record at the Law School.

Complaint: Cheating and Plagiarizing – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty

Findings: Student plagiarized exam answers, word for word, from sourses available online.

Corrective Action: Student received a grade of F in the course. Student must write a letter of apology to the course professor, and the student must write a letter of reflection to the Dean. Student is suspended through the Fall 2022 semester.

Complaint: Cheating – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty, and 901(6) – Respect for Law School and University Authority

Findings: Student collaborated on a remote examination, in direct violation of examination instructions, and subsequently lied to University administration concerning this conduct.

Corrective Action: Student received a grade of F in the course and is required to retake the course. Student must write letters of apology to the course professor and the administrators to whom the student lied and write a letter of reflection to the Dean.

No complaints were referred to the Judicial Committee during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Complaint: Cheating – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2) – Honesty, and 901(6) – Respect for Law School and University Authority

Findings: Two students impermissibly collaborated on assignments in LAWR I and on the take-home portion of the final examination in Criminal Law; the two students also made false oral and written statements to the Judicial Committee.

Corrective Action: The students were withdrawn from LAWR 2, suspended for a summer and fall term, and required to include a written reflection with any application for reinstatement thereafter.

No complaints were referred to the Judicial Committee during the 2016-2017 academic year.

No complaints were referred to the Judicial Committee during the 2015-2016 academic year.

No complaints were referred to the Judicial Committee during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Complaint: Criminal Complaint – Violation of Academic Regulations  901(4) and 901(7)

Findings: Student entered a guilty plea to Class A misdemeanor

Corrective Action: Student was suspended for one academic year, retroactive to the beginning of the Fall 2013 semester.  The student may apply to the Dean of the Law School for reinstatement for enrollment for the Fall 2014 semester.  Student must include a reflection statement in the request for reinstatement taking responsibility for the student’s actions.  Student must continue work with a therapist/counselor, and follow the treatment plan prescribed.  Student must authorize the Dean or the Dean’s designee to verify that the student has been compliant with the treatment program.

Complaint: Harassment – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(4)

Findings: Student verbally abused and threatened another Marquette student and sent text messages that were hostile and demeaning.

Corrective Action: Student was directed to perform 80 hours of community service and participate in anger management counseling.

Complaint: Cheating and Plagiarism – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2)

Findings: Student copied other students’ answers to three written assignments, representing other students’ ideas as his own. 

Corrective Action: Student was suspended for a minimum of one year and may apply to the Dean for reinstatement thereafter; student was withdrawn with a grade of F from the class in which the cheating and plagiarism occurred; student’s application for reinstatement must include a reflection statement and a plan expressing how the student will avoid future ethical violations as a student and as a member of the legal community.

Complaint: Plagiarism – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2)

Findings: Student submitted a law journal comment draft that contained a large amount of content that had been written by another student.

Corrective Action: The student was suspended for a minimum of one semester, after which the student could apply for reinstatement. The application for reinstatement was to include a reflection statement on lessons learned through the experience.

Complaint: Plagiarism – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2)

Findings: Student submitted a law review comment that used language that was duplicative of the language in a source document.  While proper attribution was given, exact language was not properly quoted.

Corrective Action: The student was directed to resign from the law review; grades of U were given for both semesters and no credit awarded; student instructed to write letters of apology to the Dean and to the law review; 60 hours of community service to be performed before graduation.

Complaint: Cheating – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2)

Findings: Student had submitted a paper for one course that the student subsequently submitted for another course without substantial revision or permission from the professor

Corrective Action: Suspension or admission of misconduct, in writing, and apologies to the Dean of the Law School and the Professor of the course in which the misconduct occurred.

Complaint: Cheating – Violation of Academic Regulation 901(2)

Findings: Students collaborated on an assignment, in direct violation of course instructions. 

Corrective Action: Students were given no credit for the assignment.
