New Organizations 2020-2021

  1. Diversity Inclusion Committee - The Sports Law Program's Diversity Inclusion Committee seeks to foster an inclusive and welcoming space for purposeful discussion and education. Our goal is to facilitate open and honest dialogue in an empathetic learning environment. As members of the Sports Law community, we believe it is our responsibility to promote the importance of diversity and equity in sports and society. 
  1. Peer-to-Peer Network - Created in 2020, the Sports Law Program Peer-to-Peer Network is a network of 2L and 3L students who help to familiarize and engage incoming 1L students with the Sports Law Program and helps guide them through their first year as part of the law school and Sports Law Program.
  1. Sports Law Student Alumni Outreach Committee - Created in 2020 the Sports Law Program Student Alumni Outreach Committee works with Professor Anderson on programing, networking and outreach with members of the Sports Law Alumni Association.
  1. 1L Sports Law Program Student Outreach Committee - The first year student (1L) Sports Law Program Student Outreach Committee was created in 2021 to act as a network for 1L students interested in the Program to meet their peers, and began to get involved in the Sports Law Program

Historic Sports Law Student Organizations

  1. Sports Law Competition Board - The Sports Law Competition Board coordinates Sports Law Certificate Program student participation in internal and external sports law competitions.  Internally the Board develops and manages the Collegiate Athletics Negotiation Competition each fall, and the Professional Sports Negotiation Competition each spring.  The Board also nominates students to participate in all outside sports law competitions, and members serve as liaisons to and supervise each national team.

  1. Sports Law Society - Marquette's Sports Law Society acts as the student arm of the Marquette University Law School Sports Law Program. Society members assist the Sports Law Program and the National Sports Law Institute in preparing conferences, seminars, workshops, career panels and other events, in addition to hosting various social events for Society members
  1. Marquette Sports Law Review - The Marquette Sports Law Review, formerly the Marquette Sports Law Journal, is a national bi-annual scholarly review addressing issues in sports law.

Sports Law Program Student Awards

 

  1. Marquette Sports Law Review Comment Competition Award - Created by the Marquette Sports Law Review's 2012-2013 Editorial Board, the Marquette Sports Law Review Comment Competition Award is given annually to the member of the Sports Law Review who wrote the best overall student comment during the current academic year as judged by the Sports Law Review's Editorial Board
  1. Janis Doleschal “Risk Management in Sport Writing Competition and Award  - Created in 2017, and supported by the generosity of the National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors member Janis Doleschal, the "Risk Management in Sports Law Award" recognizes the Marquette University Law School student who writes the best essay focused on an important risk management related issue in the sport industry, as judged by the Competition Review Committee.   1. Martin J. Greenberg Sports Transactional Skills Award - The Martin J. Greenberg Sports Transactional Skills Award is given annually to a student in Professor Greenberg's "Sports Venues" or "Representing Professional Athletes and Coaches" Workshop for his or her performance in the class and contribution to the Sports Law Program.
  1. Anne Wall “Ethics in Sports Law Writing Competition and Award - Created in 2017, and supported by the generosity of the National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors member Anne Wall, the "Ethics in Sports Law Award" recognizes the Marquette University Law School student who writes the best essay on a current ethical dilemma in amateur or professional sports as selected by the Competition Review Committee. Complete details on the current writing competition can be found here.
  1. Collegiate Issues in Sports Writing Competition and Award - Created in 2020, and supported by the generosity of Sports Law Program alum Christian Bray, class of 2014, the “Collegiate Issues in Sports Law Writing Competition” recognizes the Marquette University Law School student who writes the best essay focused on an important collegiate athletics related issue in the sport industry, as judged by the Competition Review Committee. 
  1. Annual Sports Law Alumni Achievement Award - The Annual Sports Law Alumni Achievement Award was created in the spring of 2004. Sports Law Certificate candidates for the award during the second semester of their second year. Candidates are evaluated using the following factors: (1) performance in sports law courses taken at Marquette, (2) membership and performance on the Marquette Sports Law Review, (3) Service to/and involvement in Sports Law Program student organizations, and (4) Attendance at, and service to, National Sports Law Institute and Sports Law Program events and activities.
  1. Sports Law Program 1L Service Award - The Sports Law Program 1L Service Award recognizes a Sports Law Certificate Program student who contributes to the success and growth of the Sports Law Program through service to and leadership of Program events, activities, and student organizations.

 

Charles W. Mentkowski Sports Law Alumnus of the Year Award

Created in 2002, the Awards Committee of the National Sports Law Institute's Sports Law Alumni Association presents this award to the alum who demonstrates the following qualities; dedication to the sports law program at Marquette University Law School while a student at Marquette, contributions to the Sports Law Alumni Association, contributions to the field of sports law in general, and support of the NSLI and Sports Law Program after their time as a student in the law school.
